A scenic view featuring the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a cylindrical, white-marble structure prominently tilting to one side.
Pisa, Italy. Aerial view of Piazza dei Miracoli with the round white marble Baptistery of San Giovanni in the foreground, the Pisa Cathedral and the Leaning Tower rising behind it on a broad green lawn. The Baptistery has a cylindrical body of blind arches and a gallery of slender columns, topped by a double dome whose outer hemispherical shell is covered in red tiles on one side. This landmark is the largest baptistery in Italy, about 55 metres high, and its double dome gives it famous acoustics. Behind it stands the Cathedral, with a long white marble facade and a grey dome, next to the tall cylindrical bell tower with its visible tilt. To the left, the long Camposanto cloister building with a grey roof and white arcaded walls borders the square, with a medieval stone wall along the edge. The surrounding historic city spreads out in every direction, with dense terracotta roofs, ochre and orange facades, tree-lined streets and a stadium in the distance. Hazy mountains close the horizon beyond the Tuscan plain. Warm low morning sunlight in summer casts long soft shadows across the grass and gives the scene a calm, hazy, golden atmosphere. Shot from a drone at high altitude, this top view shows how the monuments sit in the urban fabric, a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of medieval architecture and a popular travel and tourism destination.
