National Coat of Arms of Mexico - The design is inspired by the legend of the founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1325. According to Mexica mythology, the god Huitzilopochtli commanded his people to journey from Aztlán until they found a sacred sign: an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a snake. At that exact spot—an islet in Lake Texcoco—they were to found their city, the site where Mexico City stands today.
