Aerial view of the De Hef vertical lift bridge, a green steel railway structure with two tall lattice towers and arched truss spans crossing the Koningshaven channel, rendered in a bright cartoon illustration style. Beside it, the Koninginnebrug road crossing spans the same water, carrying traffic between the Noordereiland island and the mainland. De Hef was completed in 1927 and was the first of its kind in western Europe, built to replace an older swing span that caused repeated ship collisions. Its green riveted steel framework, rising towers and curved spans make it the dominant subject of the composition. The surrounding setting is a dense urban waterfront, with the wide river curving toward the upper right and a harbor channel in the foreground. Rows of low brick apartment blocks, tree-lined streets and green parkland fill the left and right banks, while modern high-rise towers and pink and blue office buildings rise in the distance. Boats are moored along the quays and a busy road runs beside the water. Strong black outlines and saturated colors give the scene a poster-like, sketch-inspired look, with yellow-green river water, teal bridge steel and purple and magenta rooftops. The bright daylight and clear sky create a lively, sunny summer atmosphere suited to travel, tourism and urban history themes.
