The choices for winter open-water fishing as few in Wisconsin as everything freezes over. However, theses is a heated lake(at least until 2024) that is warm all winter. Went there and the water was around 80 degrees and plenty of fish action by the parking lot.
We had a warm day yesterday in Southern Wisconsin so I went out to the Sugar River at Dayton to take advantage. I was hunting for the Big Fish of Death but it turned more into a multi species day with suckers, Smallmouth Bass, and a small Northern Pike.
Finally back in Wisconsin and that means that I am going to go after the big fish of death again. It was pretty productive and I caught a decent number if fish but the ice shelf was sketchy and while fighting a Big Fish of Death, I nearly fell into the Sugar River.
Went to Lower Meramec Park again last week and this week to get more fish. While the fish weren't quite biting as hard as 2 weeks ago, I didn't manage to catch some drums and a Catfish and had surprise bits by a few bass.
I went to Lower Meramec Park for two days in the row, bottom fished with worms and prepared brined fish and also tried my luck snagging and pulling with spoons since snagging season is underway in Missouri until the 31st of Jan. Caught a big fish and a surprise fish.
As the last of the sort of warm weather rolls around for 2020, there was one more fishing adventure left in open water before we go full-scale ice fishing or head south for the winter. This day was a great day as we caught many big fish of death.
Having fished both Wisconsin and Missouri a lot, I have decided to make a comparison of the two states to determine which is the better fishing state. Both states are excellent for fishing, but there can be only 1.
I went fishing on the Mississippi River this week. Although the Big Catfish refused to bite, I did get a good collection of Drum and smaller Catfish. Overall, it was a bit of a disappointing 1st Mississippi river trip but at least we caught plenty of fish.
I decided to go to nearby Castlewood State Park to go fishing and chose a spot near the confluence of Kiefer Creek and the Meramec River. There were a lot of fish including drums, suckers, and catfish.
After fishing the Missouri for a few days, I decided to go try to Meramec. Only got 1 day on it since it flooded the next day but I caught a few fish and brought them home for a delicious, hot-braised meal.
