The Old Valley Furnace, a historic ironworks in Preston County, West Virginia, built in 1837 by Andrew Ochiltree and operated by James Caldwell before passing to William Douglass. It and the nearby Greenville Furnace shut down around 1840, undone by long transportation routes and too little capital.
The Oregon Furnace was an iron-smelting structure built in 1849 by entrepreneur Richard Green. It is located along the stream trail system within the 1,100-acre Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Maryland. The discovery of goethite iron ore and marble on the property in the 1830s shifted the area focus from agriculture to industrial mining. The furnace itself initially ran full operations under Green until the early 1850s, at which point a fire and business consolidations shifted the primary smelting operations to the nearby Ashland Iron Works. However, the actual excavation of the Oregon Ridge iron ore pits and banks continued to supply local industries for decades, ultimately ending in July 1884 when the active ore banks were shut down. Today, only the archaeological remnants, ruins of the mining village, and descriptive historical markers exist along the park trail network.
The iron smelting furnaces have sat idle for many years and now they are part of the Historic State park on the Garden Peninsula in Michigan. They help tell the story of the deep history of the UP.
